چکیده

This paper analyzes the problem of matching two heterogeneous populations, e.g., men and women. If the payo¤ from a match exhibits complementarities, it is well known that absent any friction positive assortative matching is optimal (PAM). Coarse matching refers to a situation in which the populations into a …nite number of classes, then randomly matched within these classes. In a seminal paper, McAfee (2002) showed that when the match payo¤ function is multiplicative and type distributions satisfy certain hazard rate conditions, then coarse matching with exactly two classes can capture at least half of the total surplus generated by PAM. A limitation of McAfee’s result is that he restricts attention only to two classes and also to a …xed way of partitioning the two populations, namely, at the mean. The focus of this paper is the performance of coarse matching schemes with a …nite number of classes. The main results of the paper are the following ones. First, assuming a multiplicative match payo¤ function, we derive a lower bound on the performance (fraction of the total surplus) of n-class coarse matching under mild conditions on the distributions of agents’characteristics, which provides more ‡exibility of partitioning the populations. Second, we prove that this result generalizes to a large class of match payo¤ functions. Third, we show that these results are applicable to a broad class of applications, including a monopoly pricing problem with incomplete information, as well as to a cost-sharing problem with incomplete information. In these problems, standard models predict that optimal contracts sort types completely. For example, a monopolist will o¤er a continuum of product qualities. Our result implies that a monopolist can capture a large fraction of the second-best pro…ts by o¤ering pooling contracts with a small number of qualities.

Using Generalized Language Model for Question Matching

Question and answering service is one of the popular services in the World Wide Web. The main goal of these services is to finding the best answer for user's input question as quick as possible. In order to achieve this aim, most of these use new techniques foe question matching. . We have a lot of question and answering services in Persian web, so it seems that developing a question matching m...

Extraction of fine motion through multiple observations of human demonstration by DP matching and combined template matching

This paper describes our current research on how a robot, through observation of human demonstrations, can learn task level representations of human hand-work tasks. Representations proposed so far typically handle a human hand trajectory as it is or segment the entire task into a discrete pre-determined symbol sequence; but to make a generalized model of human hand-work tasks, both types of in...

تحلیل حرکت جریانات دریائی در تصاویر حرارتی سطح آب دریا

Oceanographic images obtained from environmental satellites by a wide range of sensors allow characterizing natural phenomena through different physical measurements. For instance Sea Surface Temperature (SST) images, altimetry data and ocean color data can be used for characterizing currents and vortex structures in the ocean. The purpose of this thesis is to derive a relatively complete frame...

Algebraic Multilevel Preconditioners for the Graph Laplacian Based on Matching in Graphs

This paper presents estimates of the convergence rate and complexity of an algebraic multilevel preconditioner based on piecewise constant coarse vector spaces applied to the graph Laplacian. A bound is derived on the energy norm of the projection operator onto any piecewise constant vector space, which results in an estimate of the two-level convergence rate where the coarse level graph is obt...

Marker-free Automatic Matching of Range Data

Matching of multiple views is often addressed in 3D-model generation and is normally a two-stage process consisting of a coarse and a fine matching stage. Coarse matching, that is the pre-alignment of the surfaces for the complex forms, which can be positioned far away from each other in 3D space, is a difficult problem to solve. Fine matching on the other hand can be performed accurately using...
